Florida Region Sanibel, Captiva and Gasparilla Islands, Venice, Clearwater,
St. Petersburg, Matlacha, One is introduced to the Florida Islands of Sanibel and Captiva via the Sanibel Causeway. In the summer hot breezy salt water, freshly opened sea oats, sparkling blue green ocean and palm trees nestled in coves greet the senses. For the past fifteen years I have explored and interpreted numerous Gulf Coast beaches, each with its own special combination of elements. St. Petersburg, Matlache and Fort Meyers offer a variety of seasoned commercial fishing boats for subjects. Tarpon Springs is home to a fleet of sponge diving boats. Port Boca Grande Lighthouse, nestled in dunes at the far end of Gasparilla Island is a favorite. Clearwater offers large rolling white sand dunes topped with sea oats and a lush variety of palm trees. Casperson and North Jetty Beaches near Venice are spotted with volcanic rocks interspersed with sea grapes, grasses and palm trees. Bowditch Point at the North end of Fort Meyers Beach offers vistas facing Sanibel and Captiva Islands. High on a bluff I found trails leading down to the waters edge through lush vegetation with abundant bird life. Click
