OUTER BANKS, NORTH CAROLINA Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands One finally arrives at Hatteras Village, NC with some effort. From Ohio one traverses mountainous terrain, lowland swamps and two lane roads through small towns to reach the Outer Banks. From the moment I arrive the wind is constantly whipping your hair, the oily salt air clings to your skin. Gulls call overhead. One struggles to stand near the high surf crashing on the shore. The ocean gets darker, a blue gray color as the wind increases. White caps appear, the surf growing stronger as the tide rises. Sand fences anchor the dunes, casting shadows that are long and rhythmic. Towards evening the sky softens, the clouds become more horizontal and darkness comes slowly following brilliant sunsets. Subject matter abounds. Fishing shacks and boats, lighthouses, sand fences, sea oats, ocean swells on beaches, sand dunes, crab traps piled on wharfs and dramatic skies beckon. I am always amazed at the dramatic settings for the Outer Bank lighthouses. The Currituck Light located at the North end is the twin of the black and white striped Bodie Light, except that it retains the original brick color. For the past fifteen years I have painted the Hatteras Light from every imaginable vantage point, even when it was being moved to safety several years ago. I often take several ferry trips to Ocracoke Island to paint the incredible dunes, beaches and Silver Lake fishing boats, wharfs and pilings. The Ocracoke Light and Keepers Home stands pristine alongside a picket fence near Silver Lake, protected by knarled pine trees. The island, protected from development, offers one a glimpse of rugged beauty. Click on any of the paintings to view a larger representation of the work.
