NEW MEXICO, ARIZONA & MEXICO

New Mexico, Arizona, Baja, California Mexico

My first and subsequent painting trips to New Mexico were breathtaking experiences. The mountains, red, ochre, purple kept rolling and overlapping one another as I followed the Turquoise Trail, High Road to Taos and winding road to Ghost Ranch beyond Espanola. In the early morning light the Sangre de Christo mountain range rises up, the giant red cliffs emerge from the dark. The horizon appears alternately light and dark then gray.  Parallel to the highway the sound of rushing water could be heard as it passed the cotton woods lining the river bank.  In the winter, barren trees stand like crystal sculptures against the purple foothills. A high cliff near the Ghost Ranch, overlooking a deep gorge cut by the Chama River is surrounding by mineral rich rocks. Adobe structures, sagebrush, Cerulean blue benches, windows and doors, towering pines and skies filled with fast moving clouds became my subjects. Light patterns seemed to change constantly. Shadows kept popping out and become elongated on adobe structures. Overlooks, vistas, high cliffs, mountains, rock formations and mission churches were challenging to interpret.

Driving from Mexicali to San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico, one passes through parch desert land and mountains. San Felipe, bordered by the Sea of Cortez, is a thriving tourist mecca and commercial fishing village. The San Felipe lighthouse is nestled on a hillside. Colorful old fishing boats line up on shore some piled high with nets. Blue green water and shrimp boats were framed by mountains and cliffs.
